The platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) is a member of the PDGF family and is a disulfide-linked homodimer. PDGF family consists of proteins PDGF-A, -B that form three disulfide-linked homodimers (PDGF-AA, -BB and -AB). The PDGFs are stored in platelet α-granules, and are released upon platelet activation. PDGFs signals through receptors PDGFR-α and PDGFR-β. PDGFR-α is high-affinity receptor for each of the three PDGF forms. However, PDGFR-β interacts with only PDGF-BB and PDGF-AB. PDGF-BB is a potent mitogen for a variety of cell types, including smooth muscle cells, connective tissue cells, bone and cartilage cells and some blood cells.
Recombinant murine PDGF-BB is a homodimeric, non-glycosylated polypeptide of 109 amino acids and having a molecular mass of 24.4 kDa.
