Adiponectin is also known as Acrp30 or AdipoQ. It is an adipocyte specific secreted protein with 244-amino-acid-long polypeptide. Human adiponectin has about 83% and 90% amino acid identity with that of mouse and rat, respectively. Adiponectin is related to regulating glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown. It is induced during adipocyte differentiation and it secretion is stimulated by insulin. Adiponectin is exclusively secreted from adipose tissue (and also secreted from the placenta in pregnancy) into the bloodstream and is very abundant in plasma relative to many hormones.
