Apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) is a glycoprotein produced in the liver and intestine that is the major protein component of high density lipoprotein (HDL) particles. ApoA-1 is involved in the reverse transport of cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver for recycling and excretion. Hepatocytes internalize the particles and pass the cholesterol into bile for excretion. ApoA-I, which is found exclusively in HDL, has a unique ability to capture and solubilize free cholesterol. ApoA-I has therapeutic potential in patients with acute coronary syndromes.
The Human ApoA-1 cDNA encodes a 267 aa precursor protein with a 24 aa signal peptide. Recombinant human ApoA-I is a 28.2 kDa protein of 244 amino acid residues.
